Final Major Project Proposal
I had some trouble thinking about what I wanted to do for my final major project, due to the fact that out of my many ideas that I seemed to be producing, there was always the main facts of:
1. Will the idea be plausible enough, e.g. is there enough content to base my whole FMP around this one subject.
2. Will the subject I am to chose, really grab my attention, and keep it that way for the next six months?
3. Am I choosing this idea due to the fact that I think it would be cool, and that it would be cool to do one of the three main aspects within that idea?
So after sitting down and having a serious think about what I want to do for my FMP that will tick the three points I have listed above it seemed to both hit me like a ton of bricks, and be staring me in the face all along, this was Motorbikes. I have had an interest in motorbikes from a very young age, and have always been able to sit down and look at motorbikes, talk about them, and if I was still legal to, would be out riding a motorbike. This I feel die to the fact that my dad had a motorbike when I was younger, reflecting on my views when I am older. In my opinion, motorbikes play a large part in my life, and have been stereotyped a couple of times towards looking like I should ride a chopper bike myself.
This leads me onto what sort of content will be included within my FMP idea, due to the fact it’s not as simple as making a website, interactive piece and a 3D animation, I think that there needs to be meaning behind them, other than looking pretty. For one aspect of my FMP I would like to look into how the different types of motorbike sit in today’s society, for example a person on a chopper bike is stereotyped to be a big hairy thuggish biker, but nowadays a business man could have a chopper bike, which in a way, seems to be the complete opposite. These perceptions may be down to have these types of bikes are perceived in films and magazines etc, for example in a film I have seen recently, “Wild Hogs” the person on the chopper bike is the bad guy, who is out to kill and pillage, however there are four men who you wouldn’t perceive in that way (i.e. one is a dentist, another is an IT technician), who ride a chopper and have their own gang. Therefore I would like to explain this sort of thing, within my FMP, but no delve to deep into it, due to the fact that that would open up a whole new FMP to do with stereotyping, which is something that doesn’t seem to interest me one bit and isn’t what I want people to see my FMP as. I also feel that my FMP could be based on a singular style of bike or three main styles of bike, for example it could be based on superbikes alone, or there could be elements of chopper bikes, super bikes and off road bikes throughout the whole FMP. This may seem to decrease the amount I can include in my FMP, but I feel it will make it easier to understand and overall narrow my FMP down that little bit more, giving me something to focus on.
So after compiling my ideas, where has this lead me?
This has lead me to my final idea, that my FMP will be based around Chopper motorcycles, but will have aspects from the other types of motorbikes incorporated within it. This is because chopper motorcycles is the type that interests me the most, this is probably due to the fact explained above, the music I listen to and the films I watch, once again, referring back to the stereotype thing, where I am stereotyped to like that type of motorcycle, which in this case is un-cannily true.
3D animation Idea
This is the aspect of my FMP I would like to complete to a high professional standard, due to the fact that I am hoping to go onto 3D animation in University after college, this is also going to play a large part in my website, due to the fact that I need a high res animation of a chopper bike for my website idea, which will be explained under the Website heading. For the 3D animation I am planning on having a high resolution render of a modelled chopper motorcycle, with the artistic camera angles to show off the many different aspects, as in the tyres, the wheels and tank etc, down to the intricate brake lines. I am also planning on having a human model, or maybe a cartoon animated model, walk up to the bike, sit on it and ride off, to show of what I can do in the form of animation, also adding to my portfolio.
Website Idea
As explained above, my 3D model plays a large role in my website, this is because I am going to render out a 360 degree animation of my model and use this to make a 3D 360 degree axis around the motorbike. This will then be interacted with by clicking and dragging the background to rotate the motorbike. Placed around the motorbike then will be points that can be clicked on or hovered over to have a small box pop up, with a short piece of information about that particular part of the motorbike, for example there will be a hover point over the clutch, explaining what it does, and what over parts of the bike are used in conjunction with it etc. If this isn’t possible due to the amount of time I have, I am going to have a 360 degree animation sideways around the motorbike with the hover points on. This will have a bar at the bottom to click and drag to take the animation to a certain point, or can be played in one fluid motion.

Interactive Product Idea
For my interactive piece, I am going to make a game, in this game the player will get to choose from about 3-4 different bikes, then will have to control that bike up a motorway dodging traffic as it comes, randomly. For this I am hoping to get a scrap motorcycle, strip it down to the bare minimum, and add buttons in the appropriate place on the handlebars etc, so that the person playing the game can sit on the motorbike, and by turning the handlebars of the motorbike, they turn the motorbike on the game, left and right etc... Like that of an arcade game.
I think that I will stick to this idea, due to the fact that I am very keen to get the FMP started and I know it will hold my attention for long enough. I am also keen to get the content on the go, so I can estimate what I can get done within the time limit I have, and feel I am definitely going to get a scrap bike for the interactive piece, as I feel that will set the difference my FMP stand and the rest.
